Russian genre painting was born at the end of the XVIII century, in an era of domination of portraits and large canvases with historical, biblical and mythological subjects.

Trying to please the spoiled audience, the first genre artists wrote light beautiful scenes, often on foreign material. Such pictures were supposed to delight the eye and please the heart.
Time passed, and by the second half of the XIX century, genre painting pushed all other genres into the background. Viewers now did not tell the brush masters which subjects to choose for the paintings. Continue reading
