Russian genre painting was born at the end of the XVIII century, in an era of domination of portraits and large canvases with historical, biblical and mythological subjects.

Trying to please the spoiled audience, the first genre artists wrote light beautiful scenes, often on foreign material. Such pictures were supposed to delight the eye and please the heart.
